We don’t mean the gremlins that can’t be exposed to light and water as in the movies… but something that can be as equally bad and cause annoyance and disruption for you as someone who works largely on the Internet.
Our computers are such a precious comodity and we quite often take them for granted; however we do need to ensure that we don’t become too blase with the whole computer thing!!
Because we choose to work from home on line we have to take into account that things break and that our computers are not immune to the occasional hiccup and glitch. This can be resolved by making sure that we have the necessary resources on standby before the inevitable can happen; and it is no laughing matter!
Gremlins can occur when we least expect it… typing away and the creative juices are really flowing; the last thing that you need is for your work to be lost by a lack of backing up all your data and work. As we are realistically running our business we have to make sure that all the right avenues have been explored in where our data is placed and how we can do this.
There are several options available to use and it all depends on your finances and what is best for you.
Some Internet providers offer a service of allowing you to back up your data through them… usually a fee added onto the monthly cost of your broadband service; a great resource if you build this into your monthly outgoings. There is the other option of using an external hard drive which can be plugged into your computer using a USB lead; this can be more cost effective as it is a one off payment and can be taken with you if you travel and use a laptop.
It’s possibly not something that you have thought long and hard about; after all if the mindset is that it won’t happen to me! Think again… It can and it will; it’s just a matter of time, all the hard work that you have done can be lost in a split second. Not for the faint hearted but a reality!!
